166.6 million.com names registered, 30 June 2026

About two in every five domain names on the internet end in .com. That's why it feels trustworthy, and why the short ones are gone: plan on two words or a word you made up.

What is a .com domain?

.com is the original generic top-level domain, created in 1985 for commercial organisations and now open to anyone, anywhere. Verisign runs the registry under a contract with ICANN. It targets no country, so it suits a business with customers anywhere.

FAQ

.com questions

Is a .com better for SEO?

Not by itself. Google ranks pages, not extensions, so a .com gets no ranking bonus over .net or .io. What .com does is target no country, while a country extension like .in tells Google the site is for that country.

Does a .com cost more to renew?

Not today: the first year and a renewal are both $14.99. Verisign sets the wholesale price and can raise it under its contract with ICANN, so renewals can cost more later. The renewal price is always shown before you pay, and we email reminders before the domain expires.

Can I buy a .com that's already taken?

Not as a new registration: a registered name stays with its owner until they let it expire or sell it. Our search shows what's free right now, with close alternatives and their prices.

Is WHOIS privacy free on .com?

Yes. Privacy protection is free on .com and keeps the owner's name, address, email and phone out of public WHOIS lookups.

For how many years can I register a .com?

From 1 to 10 years at a time. You can renew from your dashboard whenever you like, as long as the total stays within 10 years.

Can I move my .com to HostMentor?

Yes, once it's past the 60-day lock after registration or a previous transfer. Get the auth code from your current registrar and start the transfer from your dashboard. It costs $14.99 and adds a year to the registration.
