The whole .dev extension is on the HSTS preload list built into Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. Browsers turn every http:// address into https://, and a site without a valid certificate won't open at all.

Why does a .dev domain need HTTPS?
Google put the whole .dev extension on the HSTS preload list that browsers ship with. Browsers always load .dev sites over HTTPS, so you need a valid certificate before the site will open.
Can I use .dev names for local development?
Not reliably: browsers force those names to HTTPS too. Use .test or localhost for local work, and keep .dev for real sites.
